he sat down with david gregory today, and that will appear on "meet the press" tomorrow. he came out with certain words for lawmakers in terms of getting something done before the all important january 1st deadline. take a listen. >> the american people are watching what we do here. obviously their patience is already thin. this is deja vu all over again. america wonders why it is that in this town for some reason, you can't get something done in an organized timetable. why everything has to always wait to the last minute. now we are at the last minute. and the american people are not going to have any patience for a politically self inflicted wound to our economy. >> this is a tactic that president has used before. to rally the public. it did work before. but this point, we are less than three days out. it's not clear it's having an impact. if we do in fact go over the fiscal cliff, there will be plenty of blame to go around, the poles show that most of the blame will be on republicans. however president obama is the commander in chief, so he will undoubtedly get some of

here is what president obama had to say on that point on "meet the press." take a listen. >> i was modestly optimistic yesterday but we don't yet see an agreement. now the pressure is on congress to produce. if they don't, what i have said is that in the senate, we should go ahead and introduce legislation that would make sure middle class taxes stay where they are. there should be an up and down vote. everybody should have the right to vote on it. if republicans don't like it, vote no. i think there's a majority support to make sure they are held. >> two points. first, he is saying if it passes the senate, he's calling on house speaker boehner to put his back up proposal to a vote. there's a big question over weather speaker boehner will do that. also, embedded in the president's answer there is a window into the white house and democrat strategy, to leave republicans holding the ball at the end of the process if the legislation goes down for defeat, it will go down for defeat on their watch. in essence, adding to the pressure of them to get something done.

president obama arrived back at the white house this morning. the president will host a meeting tomorrow afternoon with senate majority leader reid, senate minority leader mcconnell, speaker boehner, and leader pelosi at the white house. senate majority leader harry reid took to the senate floor this morning to, shall we say, let boehner have it. >> if we go over the cliff, and it looks like that's where we're headed, mr. president, the house of representatives as we speak, with four days left after today before the first of the year aren't here with the speaker having told them they'll have -- they'll give them 48 hours' notice. the american people i don't think understand the house of representatives is operating without the house of representatives. it's being operated with a dictatorship of the speaker, not allowing the vast majority of the house of representatives to get what they want. >> lo and behold, the markets started to tank, in part on fears of reid's warning that it looked like we were going over the cliff. within an hour word came

so president obama was using his bully pulpit and the statement he gave yesterday and he'll be on "meet the press" tomorrow and even his weekly radio address all on this political topic. >> this pressure by the president on congress, how will this play out when it's time to start negotiations on the debt ceiling because best we can all tell, the raising of the debt limit will not be a part of any deal so we'll be having similar conversations in february. could there be resentment on the other side of the aisle? >> oh, absolutely, particularly if republicans feel they got rolled on this. the debt ceiling is the big leverage they hold on this entire debate. we've heard president obama say he's not going to play the same game he played in 2011 saying they got taken as hostages in a situation and debate that ends up hurting the u.s. economy. president obama says he doesn't want to do that again and it will be interesting to see how he maneuvers because congress will end upholding a vote and saying that congress no longer has the power on raising the debt limit. that remains to be seen and i
